The first images from Perempuan Tanah Jahanam showcase Joko’s penchant for an eerie atmosphere, as the upcoming horror film’s cinematography is steeped in a dark orange hue that seems to emphasize a sense of foreboding.
BASE Entertainment, one of the film studios that produced Joko’s latest horror project, recently said in a statement that the film’s cast and crew had wrapped up production in April.

Penned by Joko himself, Perempuan Tanah Jahanam was conceptualized more than 10 years ago.
“I kept fixing the story each year while at the same time also searching for the right partner to make this film,” Joko said in an official statement.
A number of celebrated actors were selected to star in the film, namely Tara Basro, Marissa Anita, Asmara Abigail, Ario Bayu and Christine Hakim. Almost all of them have worked with Joko in his previous movies.
Production for the film started in March, with involvement from choreographer Eko Supriyanto, music arrangers Aghi Narottama, Bemby Gusti and Tony Merle and composer Rahayu Supanggah.
Perempuan Tanah Jahanam is the first of three films that are a result of a collaboration between Joko, Ivanhoe Pictures, South Korean entertainment company CJ Entertainment, BASE Entertainment and Indonesian production house RAPI Films.
In addition to Perempuan Tanah Jahanam, filmgoers can also look forward to Joko’s first superhero film Gundala, which is based on a popular local comic book character and is also set to be released this year. (rfa/wng)
