A mixture of temulawak, ginger and turmeric brewed in hot water, the mixture was said to bring tremendous benefits and good health for the President.
Jamu is made with roots, leaves and flowers of indigenous plants. Traditionally, jamu is sold by mbakyu jamu or mbok jamu, women who carry a rattan basket filled with jamu bottles with jarik (traditional Javanese cloth). As a cultural heritage, jamu has been studied and a source of income in many parts of the archipelago.
Kompas.com has compiled a list of places that provide tourism services centered on the jamu industry, based on the recommendations of Murdjiati Gardjito, a food expert from Gajah Mada University in Yogyakarta.

1. Nguter Market, Sukoharjo, Central Java
Sukoharjo was named a jamu destination by the Office of the Coordinating Human Development and Culture Minister in March this year as it hosts various businesses centered on jamu production.
Nguter Market in Sukoharjo, especially, is known for its jamu ingredients, tools and products.
“This market provides everything; from the bottles, baskets and cloth to distribute jamu on the street. All is provided, including the ingredients,” Murdjiati said.
2. Kiringan village, Yogyakarta
Kiringan village in Bantul regency, Yogyakarta, is home to many jamu sellers.
Most people living in Kiringan earn a living by selling jamu with the help of carrier baskets, bicycles and motorbikes.
In the village, visitors can learn how to make jamu while enjoying its beautiful view.
3. Hortus Medicus, Surakarta, Central Java
The town has a training center for traditional medicine and herb development as well as a Jamu Science Clinic, where traditional heritage and modern science are developed for new innovations.
Visitors are welcome at the clinic and training center to learn or to get treatment for illnesses. (gis/wng)
