P

resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo shared his signature jamu (traditional herbal drink) recipe through a vlog earlier this week.

A mixture of temulawak, ginger and turmeric brewed in hot water, the mixture was said to bring tremendous benefits and good health for the President.

Jamu is made with roots, leaves and flowers of indigenous plants. Traditionally, jamu is sold by mbakyu jamu or mbok jamu, women who carry a rattan basket filled with jamu bottles with jarik (traditional Javanese cloth). As a cultural heritage, jamu has been studied and a source of income in many parts of the archipelago.

Kompas.com has compiled a list of places that provide tourism services centered on the jamu industry, based on the recommendations of Murdjiati Gardjito, a food expert from Gajah Mada University in Yogyakarta.
