Sony Pictures Entertainment released the first trailer for the film Little Women on Tuesday.

The film, adapted from the classic novel of the same name by Louisa May Alcott, is directed by Greta Gerwig and is slated to premiere in the United States in Dec. 25.

Set in the United States’ New England in the 19th century, Little Women tells the story of four sisters in the March family: Jo (played by Saoirse Ronan), Meg (Emma Watson), Amy (Florence Pugh) and Beth (Eliza Scanlen), along with Marmee (Laura Dern) as their mother. The cast also includes Meryl Streep as the aunt of the sisters and Timothee Chalamet as their neighbor Laurie.

Little Women narrates the sisters' lives from childhood to womanhood, addressing love, gender roles, war, family responsibilities and personal ambitions.

In the trailer, Jo, a writer, is seen facing an editor who says, “And if the main character is a girl, make sure she’s married at the end".

“Women, they have minds and they have souls as well as just hearts,” Jo says. “And they’ve got ambition and they’ve got talent as well as just beauty. And I’m so sick of people saying that love is just all a woman is fit for.”

Little Women reunites Gerwig with Ronan and Chalamet who previously worked with her on Lady Bird. For the film, Gerwig was nominated for the directing and original screenplay categories at the 2018 Academy Awards, while Ronan was nominated as best actress in a leading role. (ran/wng)
