he 2019 Indonesia Lokadata Conference (ILOC) discussed on Wednesday data from general perspectives and the relationship of data to such activities as e-sports, government and business.

Open to the public, the conference was held at the ballroom of Hotel Indonesia Kempinski in Central Jakarta.

Herman Kwok, CEO of Lokadata, said the conference’s main topic was how to use data in the decision-making process.

“Data, analysis and conclusion are three important processes,” said Herman during the opening of the event. “If we missed one of the processes, the end result wouldn’t be optimal. Analysis will be difficult to perform without sufficient data. Making a conclusion without analysis will be inaccurate.”

Statistics Indonesia (BPS) head Suhariyanto, one of the keynote speakers at the conference, highlighted the development of the availability and types of data as we enter the era of Industry 4.0, or the fourth industrial revolution.

“In the past, we obtained data through census, survey or administration records. But due to big data, the availability of data has changed,” said Suhariyanto. “In the Industry 4.0 era, we have to change our mindset that data isn’t in the form of numbers anymore as it can be in the form of a character, symbol, image, map or audio. Like it or not, we have to adapt.”

He added that the BPS had used mobile positioning data to count the number of foreign travelers since October 2016. The agency has also teamed up with a number of institutions, including the Geospatial Information Agency (BIG), the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN) and the Agrarian and Spatial Planning Ministry to quantify rice production using satellite data.

“We take samples from the satellite data and our staff must visit the exact location later on,” said Suhariyanto.

The 2019 ILOC also featured other speakers, namely West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil, The Jakarta Post chief editor Nezar Patria, digital payment platform OVO chief data officer Vira Shanty and Indonesia E-sports Premiere League president Giring Ganesha.

The conference was a result of collaboration between online news platform beritagar.id and the platform’s Lokadata, which handles research and data analysis with the Office of the Presidential Chief of Staff. (wng)
