T

he New York Times ran a full-page advertisement targeting singer Dua Lipa and supermodels Gigi and Bella Hadid for their public support of the Free Palestine movement. The ad, which ran on May 22, was paid for by Rabbi Shmuley Boteach’s World Values Network and has ignited controversy across the internet.

The Hadid sisters' father is Palestinian, and Lipa is currently dating their brother, Anwar Hadid. The advert featured a photo of Lipa and the Hadids, accompanied by large text stating: “Hamas calls for a second Holocaust. Condemn Them Now”.

The advert also accused them of antisemitism and labeled them as “mega-influencers” who have “accused Israel of ethnic cleansing” and have “vilified the Jewish State” as reported by The Independent.

Dua Lipa responded to the advertisement via her Twitter account on Sunday, stating that she rejected the allegation.

“This is the price you pay for defending Palestinian human rights against an Israeli government whose actions both Human Rights Watch and the Israeli human rights group B'Tselem accuse of persecution and discrimination,” she tweeted.

Lipa often shares her support of Palestinians via her social media accounts.

Bella Hadid is known for her vocal defense of Palestinians and condemns the Israeli military occupation.

“This is about Israeli colonization, ethnic cleansing, military occupation and apartheid over the Palestinian people that has been going on for years!” she stated on her Instagram account.

She joined a rally calling for Palestinian support in Bay Ridge, New York City, the United States, on May 15. Pictures of her and her sister wearing masks while waving the Palestinian flag quickly spread around the internet.

Since the Israeli-Palestinian conflict heated up a few weeks ago, several other celebrities have expressed their opinions on the matter through social media, including Israeli actress Gal Gadot and comedian Trevor Noah. The fighting has killed 248 Palestinians, including women and children, Reuters reported, while 13 Israelis, including two children, have been killed. A ceasefire was agreed upon on Friday and is expected to be extended after the worst outbreak of fighting in years.
