ndonesia has never run out of promising young musicians. From emotive pop ballads, frantic art punk collectives, to ridiculously catchy electro-pop, all these musicians released something new in the past month that is more than worth listening to.

Romantic Echoes x Pamungkas - “I’m Down”

Perhaps the only surprise was that it took them this long to collaborate in the first place. Romantic Echoes and Pamungkas have flown the flag for dandy, plaintive songsters for a while now, with their contagious brand of dramatic, cinematic pop drawing admiration and sighs from fans and critics alike. Their collaborative single showcases the duo at their crooning best, managing to sound like an early 2000’s radio throwback and a distinctly modern single at the same time.

hara - “Kebun Terakhir” (Last garden)

If anyone can turn a heavy, contentious subject matter into heart-wrenchingly beautiful songs, it’s Rara Sekar Larasati. The singer-songwriter returns with her second single, “Kebun Terakhir”, a dainty folk-ambient tune inspired by the struggles of farmers defending their land from eviction. Don’t let the subject matter fool you--this is no fist-pumping protest anthem, rather a lullaby so tender it could lull you into an early death.
