ogyakarta: The lack of familiarity of Indonesian journalists with legal issues is leading to misleading reporting, according to a Judicial Commission (KY) judge.

Suparman Marzuki, the Commission’s supervisory and investigative chief judge, said inaccurate media reports have disadvantaged people on all sides of the debate.

“The press has a powerful position. The media has to be objective,” Suparman said at a discussion in Yogyakarta on Saturday night.

Suparman said that journalists should report all incidents accurately and objectively to help the nation build a fair judicial system.

On the Judicial Commission, Suparman said that the media often reported that the commission was set up to sanction problematic judges.

“The fact is our main job is to push the government and the House of Representatives to issue strategic policies in improving our judicial system,” Suparman said.

The discussion was part of the National Press Day commemoration organized by the Yogyakarta chapter of the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI).
