eople's Welfare Coordinating Minister Agung Laksono on Sunday opened the Yacht Rally, a core activity of Sail Komodo 2013, which aims to develop potential for tourism in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).
Agung said in a statement that the spirit of maritime development was one of the main objectives of Sail Komodo 2013, including maritime tourism.
'Sail Komodo is aimed at promoting NTT as the world's main tourist destinations as well as developing boat and yacht sailing routes bound for Indonesian waters,' said Agung in the launch of the Yacht Rally in Koapan Beach, Kupang, NTT, as quoted by Antara news agency.
Currently, 106 yachts from 26 countries have entered and will participate in the rally in Indonesian waters. Eighty-seven yachts entered via Kupang while the remaining 19 yachts entered the country via Sangihe in North Sulawesi, Saumlaki in Maluku Tenggara Barat regency, and Tarakan in East Kalimantan.
The participation of the yachters in this year's Sail Komodo is managed by three operators: Back to Down Under Rally, Darwin Ambon Yacht Race, and Sail Indonesia.
It is hoped that in three to four months sailing ahead, the yachters can visit 21 regencies and municipalities in NTT to enjoy the province's exotic natural resources. The event will hopefully boost the economy of coastal communities in the area.
The rally operators will exhibit the yachts in the sailing pass event, which will culminate in Labuan Bajo, NTT, on Sept.14, scheduled to be attended by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. (ebf)
