AKARTA: The Law and Human Rights Ministry has said that 67,349 inmates received Independence Day remissions, of which 2,197 walked free from prison.

'€œThose who walked free were granted general remission II,'€ the ministry'€™s corrections directorate general, Akbar Hadi, said in a press statement as quoted by Tempo.co on Saturday.

According to Akbar the remissions ranged from one to six months in duration. He said the remissions were granted symbolically by Law and Human Rights Minister Amir Syamsuddin at a juvenile penitentiary in Tangerang, Banten.

Two weeks ago, he added, the ministry also granted Idul Fitri holiday remissions to 54,396 prisoners, with sentence reductions ranging from 15 days to two months.
