The annual urban music festival, L.A Lights Java Soulnation Festival 2013, will be held from Oct. 4 to 6 in the Sports Hall Istora Senayan in Central Jakarta. The festival will present its signature rhythms, beats and tunes of soul, hip hop, R&B and rap. Performing artists include Macy Gray, All-4-One, Far East Movement, Karmin, Adhitia Sofyan, Agrikulture, Bottlesmoker, Dira Sugandi featuring Teza Sumendra, Payung Teduh, Project POP, Raisa and Tangga. Ticket prices are Rp 320,000 (US$30) for daily and Rp 760,000 for three-day passes. Visit javasoulnation.com for more information.
Theater
Yogyakarta's Papermoon Puppet Theater will perform their play 'Secangkir Kopi dari Playa' (A Cup of Coffee From Playa) at the German Cultural Center, GoetheHaus, in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Oct. 1 at 6 and 8 p.m.. The play is a site-specific performance ' the exact stage locations are kept secret for each performance ' inspired by a romantic true story. It is performed as part of GoetheHaus' series of events themed 'Culture and Conflict'. Admission is free, but the audience is limited to 30 people. Exhibition
Renowned painter Joko Pekik will display his works in an exhibition titled 'Zaman Edan Kesurupan' (The Age of Madness, Possession) at the National Gallery in Jakarta from Oct. 10 to Oct. 20. According to curatorial notes by M Dwi Marianto, the exhibition will illustrate his work from the 1960s through the past decade. Pekik was born in Grobogan, Central Java, in 1938. He studied art in the late 1950s in Yogyakarta and was imprisoned without trial in the Soeharto era and freed just before the fall of the former president. Since his release from jail, Pekik has successfully continued his work, highly popular with both local and foreign art collectors.
