RI team clears first hurdle at Asia U19 championships

he Indonesian junior badminton team easily passed through the first qualifying round of Group A at the Badminton Asia Youth U19 Championships against Uzbekistan and Hong Kong at the Taipei Gymnasium in Taiwan on Sunday.

The national junior team swept its matches against Uzbekistan 5-0.

'They were quite easy matches. We expected the score would be 5-0 [against Uzbekistan],' said team manager Lius Pongoh in a statement on Sunday.

Indonesian mixed doubles pair Rafiddias Akhdan Nugroho and Zakia Ulfa opened, winning 21-8, 21-9 over Khodjaev Abdurasul and Khursudyan Anait, followed by Anthony Sinisuka Ginting who defeated Bhaksulaev Amrullo 21-13, 21-6 in the men's singles event.

'I used this opportunity to make myself familiar with the wind on the court. So far, so good,' said Anthony.

Indoensia's women's singles player Gregoria Mariska beat Pakina Mariya 21-13, 21-11 while men's doubles pair of Yanthoni Edy Saputra/Reinard Dhanriano also won 21-12, 21-5 over Bakshulaev Amrullo/Khodjaev Abdurasul.

The women's doubles team of Nisak Puji Lestari/Rika Rositawati, who played in the last match, sealed the victory with a 21-2, 21-12 win against Pakina Mariya/Khurshudyan Anait.

Later in the afternoon, the Indonesian team scored another team win, defeating Hong Kong 4-1.

Men's doubles team Clinton Hendrik Kudamassa/Muhammad Rian Ardianto took the first point after defeating Yonny Chung/Choi Yeung Shing 21-16, 21-10, followed by Ruselli Hartawan who won 21-16, 21-20 over Yau Ng Tsz in the women's singles match.

Jonatan Christie secured Indonesian domination over Hong Kong after winning 21-17, 21-16 over Yiu Lee Cheuk, followed with a victory from women's doubles pair Jauza Fadhilla Sugiarto/Rahayu Apriani over Ting Wu Yi/Yan Fan Ka with a score of 23-21, 21-17.

Indonesia's only loss in the first round came at mixed doubles, with Rafiddias Akhdan Nugroho/Nisak Puji Lestari falling to Yonny Chung/Yau Ng Tsz 17-21, 10-21.

The Indonesian team will face India on Monday in the final round of the group's play. India beat Uzbekistan 5-0 but lost to Hong Kong 4-1. Meanwhile, Hong Kong will face Uzbekistan on the same day.
