ndonesia's Thomas and Uber Cup teams are preparing to meet stiffer opposition at the Thomas and Uber Cup championships quarter finals after securing their berths in the qualifying rounds by defeating Nigeria and Singapore, respectively, at the Siri Fort Sports Complex, New Delhi, India, on Tuesday.
The nation's male shuttlers had another clean sweep over Nigeria 5-0. They barely stretched their muscles, snatching their victories in straight games.
Tommy Sugiarto outplayed Jinkan Ifraimu Bulus 21-4, 21-12, followed by two other singles players Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka who won 21-8, 21-10 over Enejoh Abah and
Simon Santoso who defeated Victor Makanju 21-7, 21-7.
Angga Pratama/Rian Agung Saputro won 21-13, 21-11 over Jinkan Ifraimu Bulus/Ola Fagbemi while Hendra Setiawan/Mohammad Ahsan overcame Enejoh Abah/Victor Makanju 21-8, 21-8.
World number five Tommy said his wins in the past three days had boosted his confidence prior to facing tougher opponents as he had made himself familiar with the court's conditions.
Indonesia will finally face Thailand in Group A to decide the group winner. The neighboring country, who imposed martial law on Tuesday, secured its quarter-final berth after winning 4-1 over Singapore.
Tommy, who will likely face Boonsak Ponsana ' currently world number eight ' at the first match on Wednesday said that he would try to defeat him and secure a point for the Indonesian team.
'I've met him four times and I won three of the matches. I think we're already familiar with each other's play,' he said as quoted by Antara newswire.
On the other hand, Ponsana also thought that Tommy was a tough opponent and therefore he would do his utmost to defeat him. 'Tommy is not an easy opponent, but anything can happen tomorrow. Even though I've lost three out of four meetings [with Tommy] I am still hoping to win the match tomorrow,' he said.
It was a different atmosphere among Indonesia's women's team who will face runner-up South Korea on Wednesday. Indonesia secured its quarterfinals spot after defeating Singapore 4-1. The match against Korea is only to decide the Group X winner.
'Considering [Korean players'] world rankings and head-to-head meetings, most of our players are way behind the Koreans',' Uber Cup team manager Imelda Wigoena said.
In the women's singles, Korea has Sung Ji-hyun and Bae Yeon-ju who are world ranked fifth and sixth, respectively, while Indonesia's Lindaweni Fanetri and Bellaetrix Manuputty are at 23rd and 24th, respectively.
'Hopefully we can gain points from the third women's singles and women's doubles event,' said Imelda.
She said that veteran player Adrianti Firdasary, who is also the team's captain, would likely play as the third singles player.
Imelda has also staked her hopes on doubles Greysia Polii/Nitya K. Maheswari to win.
Indonesia aims at ending its title drought at the championships as the last time it won the Thomas Cup was in 2002, while the country's women shuttlers last brought home the Uber Cup in 1996.
