UNS Rector Ravik Karsidi said that Jakob had earned the title as he was responsible for enlightening people through what he likened as "peace journalism".
Jacob is also credited with having succeeded in helping institutionalize modern, responsible and independent news reports.
'We
give this degree to recognize and appreciate Pak Jakob's efforts in
developing journalism,' Ravik said as quoted from kontan.co.id.
Irwan Oetama, Jakob's son who received the award on his father's behalf, said that the degree given to his father was a big honor not only for Jacob but also to the whole company.
Before the honorary degree from UNS, Gadjah Mada University (UGM) awarded Jakob an honorary doctorate in communications in 2003.
Jakob, who graduated from UGM in 1961, began his journalism career with Intisari magazine. In 1965, along with P.K. Ojong, he established Kompas, which today remains the country's largest morning newspaper.
