ublic policy analyst Agus Pambagyo is saying it is time for President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo to have a proper spokesperson in order to address conflicting statements issued by his ministers.
"Jokowi should reopen the position of the spokesperson to help reduce the temperature of the political confusion," Agus said on Sunday as quoted by tempo.co.
Agus explained that the spokesperson's job cannot be fully entrusted to the Cabinet secretary or state secretary, like what Jokowi is doing now, as doing so risks clouding the political climate.
He gave as an example Jokowi's much-lauded speech at the Asian-African Conference regarding the International Money Fund (IMF), for which Cabinet Secretary Andi Widjajanto claimed responsibility as the writer.
According to Agus, such a declaration should not have been made because the President's speechwriters are never publicly disclosed until their term is complete.
'When former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono commented on the contents of the speech, [Andi] became silent. SBY's comments were instead replied to by the Finance Ministry. This shows a lack of communication between ministries,' Agus said.
Another example Agus gave was when Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman declared he was going to resume rice imports, causing Jokowi to deny his minister's comments. (dyl)(+++)
