A

n Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) legislator has called on President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo to submit the name of a candidate for Indonesian Military (TNI) commander to the House of Representatives to undergo screening and to replace Gen. Moeldoko, who reaches retirement age on Aug. 1.

'€œIn reference to the TNI Law, a TNI commander is appointed and dismissed by the President after gaining political approval from the House and a new TNI commander hopeful is to be recommended at least 20 days before the predecessor ends his term of office,'€ he said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Hasanuddin said Moeldoko was to end his tenure on Aug. 1, but the President should submit the name of his successor by June 19 at the latest because the House would go on recess on June 10 until early August.

'€œWith such a schedule, the new TNI commander could be sworn in at the end of July 2015, a few days before Moeldoko ends his term on Aug. 1.

'€œReferring to the law, if the previous TNI commander was from the Navy and the incumbent from the Army, the next should be the Air Force'€™s turn,'€ he said as quoted by kompas.com.

Hasanuddin, also member of House Commission I on information, defense and foreign affairs, said the next TNI leader would face at least four challenges: improving soldiers'€™ professionalism, modernizing defense arsenals, improving soldiers'€™ welfare and settling land disputes. (rms)(++++)
