wo residents have been killed in a large celurit (traditional machete) fight, known as a carok, in Berbeluk village, Socah district, Bangkalan regency, Madura Island, East Java.
'The fight was triggered by one member of a group carrying a celurit. The other group felt offended,' Bangkalan Police deputy chief Comr. Mudakkir said on Tuesday.
Muddakir said the police were still securing the scene of the brawl, which occurred on Monday night, as well as a hospital where some victims were being treated, trying to avoid revenge attacks.
To prevent carok in the future, he said the police would soon gather religious and community leaders to discuss how to curtail the residents' habit of carrying celurit.
