ormer Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Muhamad received an honorary doctorate degree Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta on Thursday for to his efforts in peace and Islamic studies.
Accompanied to the ceremony by his wife Siti Hasna, Mahathir voiced regret with regard to Muslim - majority countries that continued to fight each other, saying the countries had not implemented Islamic teachings on peace.
'According to the Koran, Muslims can go to war if they are attacked,' Mahathir, who founded the Perdana Global Peace Foundation in 2005, said in his speech.
The degree represents the 22nd award Mahathir has received from institutions outside Malaysia. In Malaysia itself, he has received 24 honorary doctorates.
