he organizers of the 2018 Asian Games have said they are looking for at least Rp 2 trillion (US$150 million) in sponsorships to help roll out the multisport event in August next year.

“We’re aiming for Rp 1.5 trillion to Rp 2 trillion in sponsorships,” Coordinating Human Development and Culture Minister Puan Maharani said in a statement.

On Thursday, Vice President Jusuf Kalla held a meeting on the Asian Games that was attended by Puan, Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi, Energy and Mineral Resources deputy minister Arcandra Tahar, Communications and Information Minister Rudiantara and Indonesian Asian Games Organizing Committee (Inasgoc) head of administration Francis Wanandi.

The meeting focused on getting sponsorships from the state, private firms and international companies.

Puan said the government could only disburse Rp 4.5 trillion from the state budget to organize the biggest quadrennial event in the region.

Therefore, sponsors from other areas are strongly needed.

So far, Indonesia has spent nearly Rp 30 trillion on infrastructure, supporting facilities and the light rapid transit (LRT) construction project, said Puan.

“The final disbursement from the state budget may vary – it is still being studied. We may reduce it if we can collect more money from targeted sponsorships,” she added.

After the meeting, Puan said she hoped the participating ministries would help persuade companies to participate in funding the Games.

“We hope the ministries can proactively invite state companies, private firms and international entities as well as individuals to become sponsors,” she said.
