fish auction museum is to be established no later than December on the site of the former Pasar Ikan (fish market) in Penjaringan, North Jakarta, said the head of the Jakarta Maritime, Fisheries and Food Security Agency (DKPKP), Darjamuni, on Tuesday.

The 2,250-square-meter museum was being developed to promote marine tourism in the capital and would be integrated with Jakarta Old Town, he said, as quoted by kompas.com.

“There will be a display area where we can look at old photographs, a cafeteria and a souvenir shop in the museum,” he added.

Together with the Jakarta Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Agency, the DKPKP will provide an opportunity for residents of the local vicinity to sell souvenirs at the museum. Darjamuni added that 60 percent of the museum's construction had been completed.

Jakarta City Secretary Saefullah had announced earlier that besides the museum, the administration would develop a market and a public park in the Pasar Ikan area.

The planned “hexagonal market” is to be developed by city-owned market operator PD Pasar Jaya, while the park will be developed by the Jakarta Forestry, Park and Cemetery Agency.

The tourist attractions will be developed on the site of the former Pasar Ikan village, whose residents – along with those of Kampung Akuarium – were evicted by the Jakarta administration in April 2016.

The revitalization of Pasar Ikan as a marine tourist spot was originally planned by former governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama, but its development had come to a standstill since the emergence of the blasphemy case and subsequent trial against him.

After Anies Baswedan was elected as Ahok's successor this April, dozens of residents reemerged to erect semi-permanent dwellings on the cleared land. (cal)
