T

he police are in the dark over the alleged mugging of a woman who was locked inside a ride-hailing vehicle for seven hours in West Jakarta.

A resident of Tambora, identified only as Santi, 24, was reportedly robbed while inside a GrabCar minivan on the way to her office in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, on Monday morning.

West Jakarta Police general crimes unit chief Adj. Comr. Rulian Syauri said on Wednesday that Santi was still in shock, making it difficult for the police to gather information.

The police alleged that the minivan driver, Gugun Gunawan, worked with two accomplices who hid in the back seat of the car to assist in the premeditated crime.

“The victim was choked with a jacket right after she entered the car,” Rulian said as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com.

The suspected perpetrators, he added, allegedly threatened to kill Santi while pointing a sharp object at her hip. They allegedly  robbed her of her necklace, bracelet, mobile phone and money.

Rulian said Santi was locked in the car with her eyes closed while Gugun drove for seven hours. Gugun allegedly dropped the victim off near her house at around 1 p.m.

“We have yet to determine why the perpetrators took [Santi] home,” Rulian said.

“Gugun’s identity is registered by Grab's administration. But we should make sure of that because sometimes drivers use fake identities,” he added.

Grab Indonesia managing director Ridzki Kramadibrata apologized on behalf of the company for the alleged incident.

“We regret that the mugging incident involved one of our drivers. We’re willing to provide any help to ease the victim and her family,” he said during a press conference on Wednesday. (vla)
