he Research and Technological Development for Geological Disaster Agency (BPPTKG) has reported that another phreatic eruption occurred at Mount Merapi in Magelang, Central Java on Thursday morning.
The sudden eruption, which took place at 2:55 a.m., lasted for four minutes and was accompanied by a rumbling sound. The volcano spewed ash reaching up to 6,000 meters.
“Stay calm and prepare your mask, eyeglasses, eyedrop solution, hat and jacket if you go outside. Ash rain fell on Sumber village, Magelang,” BPPTKG said on their official twitter account.
The first phreatic eruption this month happened on Friday, May 11. Volcanic activity at Mt. Merapi has increased since then.
Officials have advised people to stay outside a 3-kilometer radius of Merapi’s peak. Mt. Merapi National Park (TNGM) has closed all access routes to the mountain for more than a week, following the phreatic eruption on May 11. (ahw)
