The Democratic Party’s commitment to the Prabowo cause had been in doubt ever since it, apparently reluctantly, joined the coalition of parties supporting the Prabowo-Sandiaga ticket last August.
he Democratic Party has reiterated its support for Gerindra Party chairman Prabowo Subianto’s presidential bid, following rumblings of discord between the party and the Prabowo-Sandiaga Uno campaign.
Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, son of Democratic Party chairman Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and head of the party’s joint election command (Kogasma), joined Prabowo at a rally in Surakarta, Central Java, on Wednesday, after missing several previous campaign events.
“I, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, together with the Democratic Party, am fighting for Prabowo-Sandi. Hopefully our lives will be better in the future,” he said at the rally, after being asked on stage by Prabowo, as shown in a video on the official Gerindra Youtube channel.
“Let us continue to work until April 17. There are only seven days left, let us close ranks to ensure the victory of Prabowo-Sandi,” he continued.
The Democratic Party’s commitment to the Prabowo cause had been in doubt ever since it, apparently reluctantly, joined the coalition of parties supporting the Prabowo-Sandiaga ticket last August.
The Democrats finally signed on to the coalition the day before the nominee registration deadline, despite a dramatic and public falling out with Gerindra over the vice presidential slot, which included Democrat deputy secretary-general Andi Arief calling Prabowo a “cardboard general.”
The cracks have reappeared in the past few weeks, with Democrat executives squabbling with Gerindra politician and Prabowo’s younger brother Hashim Djojohadikusumo about the latter’s statement regarding who would get cabinet seats if Prabowo won the election.
