n an attempt to get included among the prestigious Abbot World Marathon Majors, the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCSM) is going the extra mile by making this year’s race an evening event.
Hosting a marathon is no new thing for the city-state as it has done so since 1982. The organizers believe that shifting it to the evening will create a “wow” effect, distinguishing it from similar races.
“Imagine running around in Singapore on a Saturday evening. It’s enough to make anyone sweat without having to run,” CEO of Sport Singapore Lim Teck Yin jokingly said, referring to the country’s tropical climate, in his opening remarks during the launch of the 2019 SCSM in Singapore on Wednesday.
Since 2017, the SCSM has been campaigning to become one of the World Marathon Majors, joining Boston, Chicago, London and New York – the brand leaders for the majors.
Besides the aforementioned cities, Berlin and Tokyo are also among the list of only six majors.
Geoff Meyer, managing director for IRONMAN Asia – the organizers of the Singapore Marathon, said he believed that shifting the race time to the evening would be a huge step forward in its attempt to be inducted into the World Marathon Majors.
“It’s been a big three-year journey for us to get to today. Last week, we had the honor, the privilege and the permission to be able to change the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon to an evening event,” he said.
