Former Kopassus leader Soenarko released, but probe continues

aj. Gen. (ret) Soenarko, a former commander of the Army’s Special Forces (Kopassus), was released from detention on Friday. His release was guaranteed by Indonesian Military (TNI) commander Air Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto and Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan.
The National Police, however, will continue their investigation into Soenarko, who has been accused of illegal firearms possession.
The retired general was arrested by the National Police on May 20 for allegedly smuggling an M4 carbine from Aceh and for allegedly giving instructions to besiege the General Elections Commission (KPU) building and the Presidential Palace on May 22, reportedly in a social media video.
He was detained at the Guntur Military Detention Center in South Jakarta.
“The investigation into the case is still ongoing in accordance with procedures,” National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo said on Friday as quoted by kompas.com.
The police approved the release given that Soenarko had cooperated with the investigation.
“He divulged everything relating to the matter that he was aware of,” Dedi said.
Dedi went on to say that Soenarko had pledged not to get involved in any criminal activity or attempt to leave the jurisdiction.
Soenarko is a supporter of presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto and his arrest was part of a crackdown on the planned May 22 rally described as “people power” by Prabowo supporters. (foy)
