new regulation that fines people Rp 500,000 (US$35.27) for sitting on the floors of MRT stations was implemented in response to complaints from passengers, an executive has said.

"We received a lot of complaints from passengers. During the holidays a lot of people sat on the floors. First officers gave them a light warning, only to see them stand up and sit down again. So we made this new rule," PT MRT operations and maintenance director Muhammad Effendi said as quoted by kompas.com on Thursday.

Muhammad added that ever since the new rule took effect, no one has incurred a fine. Those who were found breaking the rule were only warned not to sit on the floor.

MRT Jakarta corporate secretary Muhamad Kamaluddin said the new rule has been in effect since June 6.

MRT Jakarta also enforces a fine of Rp 500,000 for littering. (tru)
