Indonesia, the largest economy in Southeast Asia, and Barbados — an island state in the Caribbean region — have established diplomatic relations to foster friendship and economic cooperation between the two countries.

Indonesia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Dian Triansyah Djani and Barbados Ambassador to the UN H. Elizabeth Thompson signed a joint communique on June 19 at the UN headquarters in New York to establish diplomatic ties between the two countries.

“By establishing diplomatic relations, both countries wanted to enhance mutual understanding, strengthen friendship and cooperation in politics, economic, cultural and educational fields,” Indonesian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

Indonesia, according to the ministry, hopes to boost trade, investment and tourism with Barbados through this new relationship.

Barbados is a small country with just 287,000 people but according to the World Bank’s 2017 data, it has a per capita income of US$16,788.
