The Medan Police shot dead two infamous motorbike thieves in Medan, North Sumatra, on Wednesday.
The suspects were identified as Guntur Syahputra, 29, and Leou Halawa, 25. Both of them were members of a notorious bike thief gang in the area, who dubbed themselves Guntur CS.
Medan Police chief Sr. Com. Dadang Hartanto said the deceased suspects had allegedly taken part in eight instances of theft prior to their deaths.
“Both of them are notorious for their ruthless behavior. They didn’t hesitate to injure the officers who were trying to arrest them. Hence we shot them,” Dadang said during a press conference on Wednesday.
He added that the police also managed to arrest other members of the gang, both of them identified only as AH. The police shot both of their feet.
Dadang explained that the police arrested the motorbike thief group following a viral CCTV recording that depicted the gang members robbing their victim in front of the Health Care and Social Security Agency office on Jl. Pattimura.
Once the perpetrators’ identities were confirmed, Dadang said his team immediately arrested them in their residences.
Meanwhile, North Sumatra Police chief Agus Andrianto issued a supportive comment for his subordinates.
“I instructed them to face such groups using a measurable and firm approach to give a deterrent effect,” Agus said. (dpk)
