ome 2,000 young people participated in a half-day training program on Hoax-Busting and Digital Hygiene held simultaneously over the weekend in 20 cities across Indonesia to help improve their knowledge on hoaxes and how to verify information on Google.
In Malang, East Java, the training was held at the Merdeka University with 95 participants, mostly university students from the school’s press unit.
“This activity is important for the young generation, especially with the proliferation of hoaxes on the internet and social media,” Moch Iqbal, chairman of the event’s organizing committee, said in Malang over the weekend.
It is important for young people to know how to verify data and information before reporting or sharing them, said Iqbal, who is also a student of Malang State Polytechnic.
The training program was jointly organized by the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI), Google News Initiative, Internews and the Association of Indonesian Student Press (PPMI).
Participant Intan Randini from the Muhammadiyah University of Malang said she had been searching for such a program for quite some time.
“This is very useful for us, given the bad impacts of hoaxes in the virtual world and on social media,” she said, adding that she had especially felt the impact ahead of the 2019 presidential election as members of her family had supported different candidates.
