he National Police are saying that at least 27 people were killed and 77 others injured during fresh clashes in Jayapura and Wamena, Papua, on Monday.
"Twenty-three died and 77 were injured in Wamena. Meanwhile in Jayapura, four had died — one was Indonesian Military [TNI] personnel and the other three individuals were students," National Police spokesperson Big. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo told The Jakarta Post via text message on Tuesday.
Antara news agency previously quoted the commander of the Wamena Military District Command, Lt. Col. Chandra Diyanto, as saying on Monday that 17 people were killed during violence in the city. Of the 17 victims, 16 were non-Papuans, the military officer said.
The victims either died of stab wounds or by being burned in a fire, he added.
The authorities claimed they suspected that the National Committee of West Papua (KNPB) had masterminded the violent unrest in Wamena, where the Jayawijaya regent's office and some other facilities were burned.
