Sport enthusiasts have argued the plan to hold a car race goes against GBK's vision and mission to be a sporting complex and open green space that also serves as the lungs of the capital.
ollowing mounting protests regarding a plan to hold a car race in the Gelora Bung Karno main stadium, Central Jakarta in October, the GBK Complex Management Center (PPK GBK) has decided to scrap the plan after a meeting with the organizers.
PPK GBK head Winarto said on Tuesday he had attended a meeting with the Jakarta branch of the Indonesia Motor Association (IMI) and organizer of Mandiri I SEE Fest 2019 yesterday to discuss the controversy.
The meeting, which took place on Monday afternoon, ended with a conclusion to cancel the GBK race and scrap it from the festival’s series of events slated to be held from Sept. 27 until Oct. 6.
Winarto said the GBK had asked the committee to hold the race in the afternoon, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., when people are not swarming the ring road area.
During that short amount of time, the committee would have had to set up and then take down safety walls around the area.
“If the walls were put up at 10 a.m. and removed by 3 p.m., there would not be enough time. Given the time constraints, we decided not to force it. That was the result of the meeting,” he said as quoted by tempo.co.
Previously, sports enthusiasts and regular visitors to the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) sports complex in Central Jakarta have expressed disbelief after learning about the planned car race.
