T

he national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia has recruited three basketball players, namely Vamiga Michael, Faisal Julius Ahmad and Dimas Aryo Dewanto, as new staff members. The three officially joined the company on Oct.1.

Garuda Indonesia executive director Ari Askhara said despite their being athletes, the recruiting had been done in line with the company’s rigorous standards.

“The recruitment is our form of appreciation and also a way to support the empowerment of athletes with achievements,” he said in a statement sent to The Jakarta Post on Saturday.

He added that like any other newly recruited staff, the three were put on job training so that both the company and the new staff could explore their potential.

“These new recruited staff will be assigned at the operational directorate as flight operations staff.”

However, he had also expected that the new recruits would soon join the company’s basketball team. He believed that the additional players would propel the team’s performance in a basketball league within the State-Owned Enterprises Ministry.

Faisal Julius and Dimar Aryo used to play with the Pelita Jaya EMP Jakarta team while Vamiga Michael used to play for the Satria Muda team.

Ari said the recruitment also acts as an invitation to other athletes who are willing to build their careers in the company, adding that the opportunity to work for Garuda is an alternative for athletes or former athletes to work outside the world of sports.
