Wentius Nimiangge, deputy regent of Nduga in Papua, has announced his resignation after his close aide was shot dead by an unidentified perpetrator amid a military crackdown in the restive regency.
He publicly declared his resignation in front of locals at the regency’s Kenyam Airport on Tuesday.
Wearing a short-sleeved shirt and shorts while standing barefoot on a wet road, Wentius expressed his disappointment in the government, saying that Hendrik Lokbere, his driver and assistant, had been shot amid an ongoing military operation in Nduga that began a year ago.
“I have stepped down from the deputy regent post,” he said in his speech, a video of which was obtained by The Jakarta Post. “I don't have a position anymore. I am done. My duty is finished, along with Hendrik's life.”
Pictures of Wentius announcing his resignation have made the rounds on social media since Tuesday.
