The government said it hopes that as many as 144 national strategic projects started since 2016 will be completed by the end of 2020.
s many as 52 national strategic projects in the form of toll roads, sea ports and special economic zones are scheduled for completion this year as part of the government’s mid-term infrastructure development program, a senior government official has said.
The head of the implementation team of the Committee for the Acceleration of Priority Infrastructure Delivery (KPPIP), Wahyu Utomo, said that during the first quarter of this year several key projects, including the 37.62-kilometer Pandaan-Malang toll road in East Java, the special economic zone at Maloy’s sea port in East Kalimantan, the Wilmar Industrial Zone in Serang Banten and a water system in Umbulan in East Java would be finished and begin operations.
He said these projects were carried over from the infrastructure development program because they could not be finished on schedule because of a number of factors such as land acquisition problems.
“Infrastructure development takes time and cannot be done fast. We committed to accelerating the development but unexpected problems often hamper the construction work,” Wahyu said on Dec. 27.
The Pandaan-Malang toll road, for example, could not be finished last year because of the discovery of historic sites on a section of the route so the road was moved to another location to avoid destroying them, he said.
Several other key projects that are scheduled for completion this year include the Tebing Tinggi-Kuala Tanjung railroad in North Sumatra, which is being built to support the Sei Mangle Special Economic Zone in Makassar New Port in South Sulawesi, a water system in Bandar Lampung, the Passeloreng Water Reservoir in South Sulawesi, the Ketapang Industrial Zone in West Kalimantan and the Konawe Industrial Zone in Southeast Sulawesi.
They are among the 223 projects and three programs worth about Rp 4.2 quadrillion that have been included on the government’s strategic project list since 2016. The government hopes to have a total of 144 completed national strategic projects by the end of 2020. As many as 92 projects were completed from 2016 to 2019.
