The Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) suspects Wahyu of violating his oath of office as stipulated in a 2017 DKPP regulation by accepting illicit money.
he Election Organization Ethics Council (DKPP) grilled suspended General Elections Commission (KPU) commissioner Wahyu Setiawan on Wednesday over his alleged ethics violation in a bribery case.
The council is to determine Wahyu’s fate regarding his position in the elections body, possibly finding him in violation of ethical standards and dishonorably discharging him as a KPU commissioner.
Wahyu was arrested last week by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) for allegedly asking for Rp 900 million (US$65,948) in bribes in exchange of his approval for Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician Harun Masiku to fill the seat of a deceased politician, Nazarudin Kiemas, in the House of Representatives.
The KPK is expected to press bribery charges on Wahyu.
The DKPP held a hearing on Wednesday as a follow-up to a petition filed by members of the Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu).
“According to information obtained by Bawaslu, Wahyu as a KPU member is accused of violating his oath of office, as stipulated in a 2017 DKPP regulation. We demand the council to dishonorably discharge the defendant as punishment,” Bawaslu chairman Abhan said in a statement.
DKPP acting chairman Muhammad said Bawaslu suspected Wahyu of committing three violations: “breaking his oath, not acting independently and being unprofessional”.
