tate-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister Erick Thohir has appointed police Gen. Carlo Brix Tewu as the ministry’s new undersecretary in charge of law and legislation as part of ministry restructuring.

The active two-star policeman’s appointment became effective on Jan. 31, ministry spokesman Arya Sinulingga said on Tuesday. Carlo, who graduated from the National Police Academy in 1985, once served as the expert staff member on ideology and constitution for the Coordinating Minister on Political and Legal Affairs (Polhukham) from 2016 to 2017.

He was known as a member of the police’s “Cobra Team”, which investigated the death of Supreme Court Judge Safiudin Kartasasmita in 2001. Carlo and his team then arrested former President Soeharto’s son, Hutomo “Tommy Soeharto” Mandala Putra.

Pak Carlo from Polhukham is tasked with [settling] disputes between state-owned enterprises. There are around 20-something state-owned enterprises that have problems among one another. He is tasked with identifying the problems faced by the state firms so he understands the root of the problem so as to avoid taking the legal route,” Arya told reporters.

In his first weeks in office, Erick has discharged all of the SOE Ministry’s Echelon I officials in a restructuring effort to improve bureaucratic efficiency in accordance with President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s mission. The restructuring will reduce the number of undersecretaries at the ministry from seven to three.

Arya said Erick appointed three other people to become new officials at the ministry.

Pak Susyanto, who is from the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, was appointed as the new Secretary to the SOEs Ministry,” he said. The new ministry secretary will be tasked with assessing the regulations that hamper SOEs’ growth, he added.

Arya said the ministry had also appointed a former partner at consultancy firm Ernst & Young (EY) Indonesia, Nawal Nely, as the ministry’s undersecretary for finance and risk management.

“She will be tasked with handling risk management for all SOEs so that they can have positive cash flow,” he said.

He said the ministry also appointed former Finance Ministry director of government debt paper Loto Srinaita Ginting as an expert staff member on finance and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) development for the SOEs Ministry.

Bu Loto will handle partnerships between SOEs and small and medium businesses, as well as village-owned businesses to expedite their participation in SOE projects,” Arya explained.
