anjungpinang Mayor Syahrul passed away on Tuesday following weeks of intensive treatment at Tanjungpinang Regional Hospital, Riau Islands, after testing positive for COVID-19.
Riau Islands COVID-19 task force head Tjetjep Yudiana confirmed that Syahrul, 59, had died at 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday.
News of the mayor's death was confirmed by the head of Riau Islands' COVID-19 task force, Tjetjep Yudiana.
The mayor was first admitted to the hospital on April 11 after experiencing shortness of breath. Swab test results later revealed that he had contracted COVID-19.
Syahrul's wife, his grandchild and personal doctor had also tested positive for COVID-19 and were undergoing intensive treatment.
His burial will take place in accordance with COVID-19 health protocols, Tjeptjep added.

On April 2, Aptripel Tumimomor, at that time the regent of North Morowali in Central Sulawesi, passed away after days of treatment at Wahidin Sudirohusodo General Hospital in Makassar, South Sulawesi.
At the time of his death, a COVID-19 rapid test showed negative results for him. However, the result of the swab test -- which came out four days after his death -- revealed that Aptriptel, 53, had COVID-19. (trn)
