NE Esports, a subsidiary of ONE Championship, has joined forces with game developer Moonton and the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry to organize the 2020 Mobile Legends Professional League Invitational, which will take place online across five countries in Southeast Asia. The event is set to begin on Nov.27.

As many as 20 invited teams from Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines and Singapore will compete for the US$100,000 ( Rp 1.45 billion) prize pool. The tournament will span two action-packed weekends with the finals culminating on Dec.6. The event will be broadcast to fans across the world via both the ONE Esports and Mobile Legends official streaming channels.

ONE Esports CEO Carlos Alimurung guaranteed that the tournament would be the right stage for the best teams to compete.

“My gratitude for all sponsors, Moonton and the tourism ministry for supporting our mission to share and celebrate the stories of e-sports heroes,” he said in a statement Thursday.

Esports has gained popularity in the past five years, especially in the region. To date, given its enormous prize money, many countries, including Indonesia, are seeing a growing number of amateur and professional gamers.

Moonton Esports managing director Lucas Mao confirmed that Esports had been developing at an extremely fast pace in Southeast Asia.

“We saw a big increase in our peak concurrent users with Indonesia hitting 2.8 million and Philippines hitting over 700,000 in our latest games. We look forward to breaking another record and hitting the international e-sports stage.”

Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Wishnutama Kusubandio praised the event, saying that it could encourage domestic tourism in Indonesia.

“The virtual sports tourism event will create compelling and engaging travel experience content to encourage domestic tourism in Indonesia, while adhering to health protocols. This is in line with our goal to promote cleanliness, health, safety and environmental sustainability.”
