n what may appear to be a display of political restraint, Russian President Vladimir Putin has held off on congratulating United States president-elect Joe Biden and vice-president-elect Kamala Harris on their electoral victory until after the official result of the US presidential election is announced.

Russian Ambassador to Indonesia Lyudmila Vorobieva revealed during a recent online press conference that the Putin administration would respect the ongoing post-election procedures.

However, she noted that Moscow was looking forward to bolstering its relations with Washington throughout future presidential administrations, despite the latter’s “unfriendly” measures against the former over the last four years under US President Donald Trump.

“Our president has not yet sent his congratulations to the elected president of the US, because as the press secretary of the president has said, we think it would be better to first have the official results of the election,” Vorobieva said.

“We hope that the relations between Russia and the US under any president-elect in the next electoral period [...] will develop in a positive way, which we cannot say was the case during the past four years.”

But the Putin administration was also maintaining a “realistic” view of future Russia-US relations given the long history of animosity between the two nations, the envoy said.

The countries’ bilateral relations, which have traditionally come with challenges, have largely remained cool under the Trump administration, save for when Trump was previously accused of colluding with Russian agents during the highly contested 2016 US elections.
