T

he Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) is in hot water after an employee came forward with allegations of bullying and sexual assault, which the employee said had been going on for years.

On Wednesday, a statement reportedly written by a man identified as MS was widely circulated on social media and chatting apps. MS wrote in the statement that the bullying and sexual abuse he experienced started not long after he joined the commission.

He went on to name eight men, all of whom are believed to be active KPI employees, who harassed him on multiple occasions both inside and outside the KPI's office.

“Since I started working at the KPI in 2011, [I have] lost count of how many times they've harassed, beaten, insulted and bullied me without any retaliation,” MS said in the statement. “Such humiliating [incidents] happened to me repeatedly until I became stressed and [my mental health] slowly crumbled.”

MS claimed he had tried to report the abuse to the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) through an email that he sent in August 2017. The rights body, however, suggested that he report the incidents to the police instead, considering that they could be categorized as criminal acts.

MS then went to the Gambir Police in 2019 and 2020 but was told the issue should be resolved within the KPI.

He reportedly told his superiors about the incidents, to which they responded by moving him into a different office. The alleged perpetrators, meanwhile, reportedly received no warnings or punishments.
