In a plenary session on Thursday, the House of Representatives inaugurated the new Deputy House Speaker, Lodewijk Paulus, to replace fellow Golkar Party politician and graft suspect Azis Syamsuddin.
he House of Representatives named Golkar Party politician Lodewijk F. Paulus as its new deputy speaker in a plenary session on Thursday, replacing the embattled graft suspect Azis Syamsuddin, who was forced to vacate the position after his arrest last weekend.
After taking his vows for the deputy speakership at the plenary, Lodwijk is now responsible for overseeing House commissions I to III, as well as its Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Body (BKSAP) and Legislative Body (Baleg).
“Hopefully the appointment of Pak Lodewijk will further bolster the implementation of the House’s constitutional duties,” House Speaker Puan Maharani said during the plenary.
In comments to reporters after the meeting, Lodewijk said that he would carry out his duties to the best of his ability.
“Of course, the trust [placed in me] is a challenge,” he said, as quoted by Kompas.com.
Lodewijk went on to list his work priorities for the coming weeks, including overseeing security in Papua as the region hosts the 20th National Games (PON).
He also highlighted a number of other issues he plans to address, including deliberations for the new Indonesian Military (TNI) commander, vaccine diplomacy and the completion of the personal data protection bill.
