T

he year 2022 will remain in the memory of Kazakhstanis as the year the country faced a truly difficult and dangerous challenge, one that nearly shook the unity and cohesion of the nation. Now we must learn from what has happened and take constructive steps to eliminate the causes that led to the tragic events of early January.

We recognize that the recent events are largely caused by serious domestic socioeconomic problems. However, what happened was not mere unrest caused by public discontent. Behind the violence, we clearly see a coup attempt.

Unfortunately, peaceful demonstrations were cynically and maliciously hijacked by those for whom human life is of no value. As a tool to seize power, these forces chose terror.

Thank God we managed to unite and resist and the coup attempt failed. Ahead is a new historic stage which, perhaps, should be counted from Jan. 11. It was on this day that Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, President of Kazakhstan, announced upcoming qualitative changes in the country. Let me outline the main points of his proposals, dedicated to further state building.

Kazakhstan will take steps to radically reorganize and strengthen the entire national security system. Ahead is work on the restructuring of the Armed Forces, law enforcement agencies, national security agencies and foreign intelligence.

We have to solve the problem of inequality. The population’s income should increase as the economy grows but, in the case of Kazakhstan, this seemingly immutable axiom did not work. Behind the overall growth of the national income, its inefficient distribution hid. Financial and oligarchic groups have become the key beneficiaries.
