Revolution will always end up with some people, especially those who abuse their power, being in jail.

In the Central Java regency of Pati, the target of the uprising, one who had incurred the wrath of so many in the impoverished region was Regent Sudewo, a politician from President Prabowo Subianto’s Gerindra Party.

Last week, justice finally caught up with Sudewo but not in the way that proponents of the Pati uprising expected.

The uprising in Pati, over Sudewo's arbitrary policy to increase land and building taxes, which began in early August last year, was the first major protest that caught the nation's attention in the wake of President Prabowo's massive efficiency drive aimed at pooling funds for his free nutritious meal program.

The protest, which at times turned violent, also foretold the nationwide protests against lawmakers' lavish spending only one month later in early September.

Yet, despite the scale and intensity of the protest in Pati, the whole uprising came to naught with Sudewo managing to ignore the local council's move to censure and impeach him.

If anything, Sudewo appeared to be able to consolidate his grip on power and begin turning the table on his opponents and critics.
