Along with Ervan, the host country will also have IM Medina Warda Aulia (2383) in the main showdown at the Gedung Serbaguna Senayan in Central Jakarta.
nternational Master (IM) Mohamad Ervan (Elo 2395) of Indonesia is set to challenge Grandmaster (GM) Darwin Laylo (2439) of the Philippines as the JAPFA Chess Festival returns in Jakarta, starting on Saturday.
Along with Ervan, the host country will also have IM Medina Warda Aulia (2383) in the main showdown at the Gedung Serbaguna Senayan in Central Jakarta.
Indonesian Chess Association (Percasi) chief, GM Utut Adianto, said Ervan and Medina were the best suited to play in the main matches representing the host country due to their latest achievements abroad.
“They both came out as top scorers in the recent 2022 FIDE Chess Olympiad in Chennai, India. Ervan made seven points out of 10 rounds, while Medina bagged 8.5 points out of 11 rounds,” he added.
While Ervan faces Laylo, Medina will play against Woman GM Gong Qianyun (2271) of Singapore.
In the Chennai Olympiad, Laylo collected six points out of nine rounds, while Gong was the first female player to compete in Singapore’s men’s team.
The four masters will battle in a six-round classic to win a total of US$3,500 in prize money in the Jakarta festival, while fighting for their respective ratings.
