Indonesia failed to keep up its tradition of badminton gold at this year’s Olympics, even though it sent nine shuttlers, the largest contingent of the Indonesian Olympic squad.
ndonesia had one of its best Olympic performances of all time at this year’s Games in Paris, which concluded on Sunday, with the country bringing home two gold medals for the first time in more than 30 years.
Indonesia finished in 39th place in the Paris Games medal count, bagging one gold in weightlifting, another gold in speed climbing and a bronze in badminton.
It was the country’s best Olympic medal result since the 1992 Games in Barcelona, Spain, when it finished in 24th place with two gold medals, one silver and one bronze in badminton.
A total of 29 Indonesian athletes competed this year across 12 sports, the most competitors in two decades. The country sent 38 athletes to compete across 14 different sports in the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.
National hopes of securing more medals were dashed on Sunday after promising weightlifter Nurul Akmal fell short of a medal in the women’s 81 kg weightlifting event.
Nurul finished in 11th place after lifting a total of 245 kg in her second Olympic performance.
She lifted 105 kg in the snatch and 140 kg in the clean and jerk, but the judges declared her subsequent attempts, to lift 110 kg in the snatch and 145 kg in the clean and jerk, invalid as a result of improper posture.
