As the severe flooding that hit the Greater Jakarta area slowly receded, local authorities rushed to start the recovery process by cleaning up key infrastructure and residents’ houses, but the public demanded more tangible and long-term solutions to address the region’s perennial problem.
Recent large-scale flooding in Greater Jakarta, which has had a particularly dire effect in Bekasi, West Java, has drawn attention to the area’s poor urban planning and insufficient disaster mitigation.
Thousands of people have been displaced after days of heavy rain paralyzed Greater Jakarta, flooding homes and businesses, while newly elected officials and first responders scrambled to contain what was perceived as “one of the worst floods” in recent years.
Consumption of fast foods characterized by refined carbohydrates products, sugars and unhealthy fats raises blood sugar levels, and additional pressure on insulin function is observed. Eventually, this pattern leads to insulin resistance, a condition associated with type 2 diabetes, weight gain and obesity, among other health complications.
