Head of the Medan Tourism Agency, Odi Aggia Batubara, said the proposed event, known as the Year-End Festival, sparked criticism from residents who viewed it as insensitive to the thousands of people still affected by the recent disasters.
The Jakarta administration has said it will significantly cut public transportation fares and divert traffic along several routes on Tuesday and Wednesday to reduce congestion during New Year celebrations in the city of more than 11 million people.
