According to one of the victims’ attorneys, Ali Yusron, approximately 50 students at the Islamic boarding school were allegedly sexually abused by AS between 2020 and 2024, although most have so far declined to file formal police reports, BBC Indonesia reported.
The government has begun rebuilding the Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school (pesantren) in Sidoarjo, East Java, even as public criticism mounts over the use of state funds to reconstruct the privately run institution, whose prayer hall collapsed in late September, killing more than 60 students.
Last month, on Sept. 29, a three-story building at Al Khoziny School in Sidoarjo regency, also in East Java, collapsed while dozens of students were performing asar (afternoon prayers), killing 63 and injuring many others.
Following the President's green light to set up a new directorate general dedicated to pesantren, experts have hailed the move as necessary to improve both governance and oversight, including for structural issues believed to have led to last month's fatal disaster at a school in Sidoarjo.
The governance and controversial politics surrounding Islamic academic institutions came to a head in recent weeks after a three-story pesantren (Islamic boarding school) in Sidoarjo, East Java, collapsed last month, killing 67 students and injuring over 170 others.
