Although several government officials have expressed their support for the prosecutors’ demand for the death penalty for a pesantren (Islamic boarding school) teacher accused of the rape of his students, activists have questioned the deterrent effect of the death penalty in cases of sexual abuse.
Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Quomas has condemned the case, saying that his ministry would conduct a thorough investigation into all madrasahs and pesantren after concerns arose within the ministry that the case was just a tip of the iceberg.
While the national COVID-19 task force has tightened and expanded travel restrictions ahead of Idul Fitri, authorities are allowing tourist destinations to remain open and travelers to move within urban agglomerations. Vice President Ma'ruf Amin has also asked the task force to permit Islamic boarding school students to return home.
