View all search resultsThe Papuan People's Assembly has reportedly issued a maklumat (announcement) rejecting the creation of new provinces, saying "the development would only benefit the migrants instead of the native Papuans" as had always been the case.
The team revealed the first campaign was carried out by InsightID, an Indonesian communications firm. According to the report, the firm had been promoting pro-Indonesian government content on various websites and social media accounts aimed at international audiences.
One of the most important pieces of information is that more than eight native Papuans died that day and that they died of gunshot wounds allegedly fired by what the locals call the “security apparatus”, a joint force of Indonesian Military and National Police personnel.
The violence that occurred on Sept. 23 saw mobs, reportedly comprising native Papuans, setting hundreds of buildings, houses and cars on fire and violently attacking residents. Thirty-three people, mostly non-natives, were killed during the riots, sparking concerns of communal violence.
Two native Papuans have been awarded Pelopor Perdamaian (Pioneer of Peace) awards for their roles in saving the lives of non-native Papuans during the bloody unrest in Wamena, Jayawijaya regency, Papua, late last month.
