Poor oversight of plantations and urban developments have reduced water absorption capacity, a factor academics and environmental groups say contributed to a deadly landslide in Pasirlangu village in West Bandung, West Java.
Flooding and landslides that were triggered by torrential rains have continued to paralyze parts of Java and disrupt traffic and public service, with the worst single disaster killing at least nine people and leaving more than 80 missing in West Java.
All victims were residents of Urug village in Sukajaya district, approximately nine kilometers from the mine. They were allegedly engaged in illegal mining activities on Mount Pongkor, just outside Antam’s official concession area.
The West Java administration plans to give its stake in Kertajati International Airport in Majalengka to the central government and in return get a stake in Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung.
Persistent heavy rainfall across West and Central Java has triggered flooding and landslides with coastal areas bearing the greatest impact due to ongoing erosion. The situation is expected to continue in the coming days.
